Crivitz, Marinette County, Wisconsin

A short drive north of Green Bay, Wisconsin you will discover the "Near North" of Marinette County. With fourteen waterfalls protected within the boundaries of scenic parks, Marinette County is best known as the Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin. However, this northeastern Wisconsin county offers so much more. Marinette County has 1/3 of all the trout streams in the entire state. Home to more county forestlands per capita than any other county in all of Wisconsin, Marinette County is also known for its lakes, flowages and rivers including miles of scenic coastline along Lake Michigan's Green Bay.

Out of all of the authentic Northwoods communities in Marinette County, the Village of Crivitz is at the heart of recreation. Located directly between the 1000-acre Caldron Falls/1500-acre High Falls reservoirs area and the 2400-acre Lake Noquebay area, Crivitz is a small community of less that one thousand people. Although the village has only one traffic light it offers all of the essential day-to-day necessities that one would require for northern living: restaurants, shops, a hardware store, filling stations, churches, schools, a new clinic and an old-fashioned bakery.

South River Ridge is located just across the Peshtigo River and within walking distance to "downtown" Crivitz. At the edge of the village limits, the area enjoys all of the benefits of municipal services like sewer, water, natural gas, electricity and road maintenance while at the same time it feels like being along a secluded country lane.

Just south of the entrance to the road that accesses the property is a small village park and boat launch on the Peshtigo River. Along the wooded lane on which the property is situated are two village forestlands directly on the Peshtigo River; these are nice places to swim, fish or just take a walk along the shore.

If you are looking for an "Up North" vacation or retirement home that also offers nearby amenities South River Ridge would be an excellent choice. Wooded with a mix of pines and hardwoods, the property offers the very clean waters of the Peshtigo River with sand and gravel shoreline. Surveyed and guaranteed buildable with utilities and excellent year round road access, this property would be a great place to build and take advantage of all that Marinette County has to offer.

Recreation

Fishing - While the South River Ridge stretch of the Peshtigo is best known for small mouth bass action the river here is also home to walleye, muskie and panfish. Many of Marinette County's lakes, rivers and trout streams are just a short drive from the property with opportunity for panfish, trout and game fish.

Cross-Country Skiing - Miles of groomed trails with contours suitable for the novice and the expert. From small resorts with equipment rentals, to the Marinette County Cross Country Ski Association's well managed trail system this area has many choices for winter time sport.

Snowmobiling - Nearby trails will take you in to thousands of acres of forestlands in Wisconsin, down along the shores of Green Bay or across the border in to the state forestlands of Michigan. One can ride to almost anywhere in northern Wisconsin or the UP of Michigan from this location.

Waterfalls - Marinette County has dozens of larger falls and hundreds of smaller waterfalls. Many are easily accessible via county parks or forestlands that are yours to explore.

ATVing - Northeastern Wisconsin has become a recreational playground for ATV enthusiasts. Remote forestlands, lakes and rivers provide riders with an unmatched setting for riding. In Wisconsin, Marinette County has over 130 miles of year round trails and Oconto County has nearly 110 miles of trails. Jump across the border into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and unless a specific state forest road is posted closed to off road vehicles it is legal to operate on state forest roads as well as the designated trail systems.

Hunting- Opportunity is doubled with a location near the Wisconsin and Michigan border. There are hundreds of thousands of acres of federal, state and county forestlands. Additionally, there are thousands of acres of forest croplands, managed forestlands and commercial forest act lands that are open to hunting and recreation. Marinette County has one of the largest whitetail deer populations in North America, good populations of grouse and woodcock and a Spring Turkey hunting season. Pheasant is found in the agricultural areas of Marinette County and populations of mallards, wood ducks and migrating geese are found along the Green Bay shoreline or in the backwaters of the area's flowages.

Bicycling - From paved rural lanes to back country trails there is a ride just right for almost anyone. Several local biking clubs provide maps, rides and route development.

Golfing - From 9 to 27 holes, Marinette County has nine public golf courses. Across the border into Michigan there is a wide choice of courses open to the public. Well maintained courses that are very affordable compared to southern Wisconsin and lower Michigan.

Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking - The roaring rapids section of the upper Peshtigo River provides whitewater action on one of the longest continuous stretches of whitewater rapids in the Midwest. Flows ranging from 300 to more than 3,000 cubic feet per second can turn the Class II rapids into Class III-IV waters. If you prefer a milder ride, late spring and summer are just right for first time rafters. The upper Menominee River has rapids similar to the great western rivers including scenery through towering bluffs and rock outcroppings. Whitewater rafting companies offer guided and unguided trips, instruction and equipment.

With fall color tours, hiking, berry picking, dog-sledding, lighthouses, and Great Lakes sportfishing this area of Northeastern Wisconsin offers recreational possibilities so diverse and numerous that it would be impossible to list them all. From just sitting on the dock and watching the water to getting out and exploring the area, South River Ridge on the Peshtigo River will serve as an excellent home base for enjoying this northern environment.
