Florence County

Florence County, located in northeastern Wisconsin, is bordered by the Brule and Menominee Rivers to the north and east, Forest County to the west and Marinette County to the south. 259 clean lakes and 165 miles of beautiful rivers, interspersed among nearly 254,000 acres of northern forestlands make Florence County seem like the Wisconsin of a generation ago. The second-lowest population of any county in the state, 80% of the county is wooded and almost half of its real estate is in public ownership. If one wants to own a property in an area that offers classic northwoods Wisconsin with modern practicality just look 90 miles north of Green Bay.

Trails - Trail systems like The Blue Ox Trail, The Whisker Lake Trail, and The Lauterman National Recreation Trail, just to name a few, provide access in to the county's back country. Quiet escape can be found on 27 miles of maintained hiking trails, 60 miles of mountain biking trails, and 30 miles of cross-country ski trails. Motorized action can found on the areas 155 miles of groomed snowmobile and ATV trails.

Fishing - From larger lakes with excellent boat launches to smaller lakes with walk-in access, walleye, northern pike, muskie, small mouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, perch and crappie are abundant. Fisher Creek, The Brule River, and the Popple River are just some of the streams that can be accessed for brown, brook, and rainbow trout.

Hunting - Nicolet National Forest covers more than 25% of Florence County, which is only a fraction of the forestlands that are open to the sports person. Thanks to this wealth of wild areas, deer, grouse, black bear, duck, geese, quail, rabbit, and squirrel are abundant. Easy access in to federal, state, county and private managed forestland hunting grounds make Florence County the perfect location to own a secluded base camp.

Canoeing/Kayaking - From lazy scenic stretches to heart pumping whitewater Florence County has 165 miles of designated kayaking and canoeing waters. The Wisconsin Wild Rivers Project is comprised of the protected Popple and Pine Rivers. The Brule River, separating northeastern Wisconsin from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is one of the best known rivers for canoeing in all of the Midwest.

Boating - Some of the waterways in Florence County that are good for boating, water-skiing, and jet-skiing include The Spread Eagle Chain, Long Lake, Fay Lake, Halsey Lake, Patten Lake, Keyes Lake, Twin Falls Flowage and the Menominee River.

Communities - Vacationers and new year round residents of Florence County will find towns like Florence, Tipler, and Spread Eagle offer all of the basic necessities as well as a welcoming small town charm. For major needs and shopping, nearby Iron Mountain offers the amenities of a small Midwestern city while retaining its 'up-north' appeal. Restaurants, shopping and medical services are an easy drive from most locations in the county. These communities reflect an area rich in history from the earliest European explorers to the lumbering and mining era to the present day.

Wilderness - If one wants to get lost in the back country look no further than Florence County. Between the thousands of acres of The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, The Whisker Lake Wilderness Area and Spread Eagle Barrens there are many places to escape the crowds. For a water destination discover La Salle, Meyers, Bull, Washburn, Little Bull, Big Bull or Jennings Falls. From old growth timberlands to vast grasslands to remote waterfalls many days and years can be spent exploring the diverse topography of this beautiful and wild county.
